Paint, Print, Sculpture, Textiles, Word, Audio, Performance, Installation

Exhibition of works by 33 artists selected through a call to respond to the prompt 'Warm the outside pool up'.

In this collaborative approach to exhibition development, HARI and Unthinkable wanted a prompt for artistic responses that echoed filmic processes, and also reflected life in Hull at this moment, so we distributed a series of boxes all around the city asking people how they felt 'right here, write now'.

We selected this prompt from the written comments as it is both ambiguous and provocative in many ways: environmental/social, local/global, memory/myth.

"UNTHINKABLE is a short film festival set up as a CIO charity based in Hull, East Yorkshire, and is now in its third year.  We consider film to be the 7th art, involving elements from all different art forms, so as a part of our festival we celebrate this through art exhibitions, music events and performances which fall alongside our film programme. We aim to provide a platform for grassroots creatives with an emphasis on creating opportunity for people within the Hull and Humber catchment area.  The type of work we want to platform is that which tries to do something new and exciting (unthinkable!) in some aspect.

For the past three years we have held an exhibition showcasing local artists’ work as part of the UNTHINKABLE film festival. This year, we're very excited to be collaborating with HARI and their new space at 25 Francis Street for the exhibition, and together have developed a new approach for the call-out and selection of works."

Collectively as an exhibition, the range of artworks provided great delight and inspiration to audiences, prompting thinking around the various interwoven experiences and issues, and connections found in form and materials.

To enrich the exhibition experience, we held events as part of the Film Festival programme, and beyond to the end of the show.  These included:

- a powerful 18+ Underground Performance Night, featuring the mesmerising Finn Darrell, Industrial Coast DJs/artists (Richie Culver, Deathdefy, BALF, Rachel Deakin), an erotic film reel, and exhibiting artist Annabel McCourt’s interactive "I’m Sorry" portrait project

- Sonics for Sculpture junk instrument making workshop and rehearsals for performance at the Film Festival Awards Night in Hull Truck

- a responsive collaging workshop

- an atmospheric Samhain / Halloween Immersive Experience Night with candle and projection lit labyrinth made by AiR Linda King, Mexican Day of the Dead Alter, an interactive scallop shell pilgrimage performance, a film shown across 3 TV’s by exhibiting artist Roz Newby and a further opportunity to participate in Annabel McCourt’s "I’m Sorry"

- a group walk around the Fish Trail to mark the end of the Critical Fish Trail exhibition at Pier St, ending with a look at Warm The Outside Pool Up

- final day Artist Talks, with fascinating insights to their pieces from Michelle Dee, Zac Girdlestone, Maria Donai, Harry Newman, Julia Roach, Holly Cryan, Kerry Winter, Roz Newby, Harmony Barr, Casey-May Simmons, Alex Kalogerakis, and Martin Lewsley.
