Exhibition of Works from an Ongoing Artistic Research Project in Dar es Salaam

Ruins of the Present is an ongoing artistic research project into the environmental and material consequences of sand mining in Dar es Salaam. Through photography, moving image, sound, text and archival research, it traces how the extraction of sand reshapes the relationship between people, matter and place.
At the heart of the project is a subtle pointer towards Swahili dimensions of time, Sasa and Zamani, looking at how extractive practices embody a collision between deep time and the rapid pace of urban development.
The exhibition showcases photographs, film, and the accompanying artistic research publication, within an installation format suggestive of the Dar es Salaam coast, with metaphorical objects.
Noah Okwudini's MA research project at the University of Hull explores how Extended Reality technologies, built on emerging 3D capture techniques like Gaussian splatting, can communicate coastal erosion on the Holderness coast.
